Light tables for graphics, photography, presentation, restoration, or for digitizing and archiving.

Since 1980 (formerly G. Karl KG), we have been developing and manufacturing high-quality light tables for professional use. From the very beginning, we have maintained close contact with end users to adapt to their needs.

The use of high-quality components in our light tables ensures a long service life with consistent light performance.

Due to the wide range of applications for our light tables, we offer two different versions:

  1. A standardized light version with a high color rendering index of Ri 97 in the color spectrum.
This is essential wherever accurate color assessment is required. High light quality is the key to a true-to-life color representation.
  2. A bright version for tasks where brightness is more important than color accuracy.

Planistar light tables through the time

1980 The First Flat Light Table of Its Kind

Use of a light-guiding panel with a granted patent. At that time, illumination was provided by four halogen lamps. With the Sortilux, distributed by Jobo, slides could be viewed directly in the portfolio.

1993First Flat Light Table with a 4 cm Build Height

Use of a Patented Mirror Grid Light Guide. Illumination was provided by T5-fluorescent lamps. Even with this technology, the two fluorescent lamps were positioned at the edges. A mirror grid print and a reflector ensured uniform light distribution.

1994Affordable Light Table with Reflector Technology

To supply the market with affordable light tables, these light tables were designed with only one fluorescent lamp and a V-reflector. They were produced for companies including Leica in France.

1998First Flat Light Table with a 25 mm Build Height

With the very narrow T2 fluorescent lamp from Osram, it became possible to produce light boxes with edge lighting. The fluorescent lamps are coupled into a 10 mm light guide. The light is evenly distributed across the entire surface through a dot pattern.

2000Flat Light Table with a 1 cm Frame

The design of the light boxes equipped with T2 lamps evolved over time according to customer requirements. The attached 10 mm frame and the flush-mounted cover glass allow for comfortable working conditions.

2008First LED Light Table

Finally, the light output of the LEDs was high enough to create larger areas with edge lighting. The only 12 mm flat light table was unique at that time.

2013Flat 12 mm LED Light Table

The comic-star of that time was the precursor to today’s professional series. The attached front glass was already frameless and equipped with particularly bright LEDs.

2016Construction of the Professional-Series with LED-Technology

The aging light table was replaced by a professional series. The surface is now glare-free and very durable with a thickness of 5 mm. The LEDs with a color rendering index of Ra92 were enhanced with an internal dimmer. The series was available in sizes ranging from A4 to A0.

2024Revision of the Professional Series to Standard Light Ri97

The Professional series is equipped with a 1 kHz dimmer so that the lighting consoles operate flicker-free. These can now be fitted with D50 standard light with Ri97. The bright version is also available with high-performance LEDs.

The materials of the lighting consoles have been adapted so that almost all materials can be recycled.
The required raw materials could be reduced by approx. 5 %.
